Former union leader Richard Read confirmed that he plans to return to political activity “at some point” in the near future, as confirmed to the press after the presentation of his second biography Richard Read, back to backwritten by the journalist Leonardo Haberkorn.
“With a group of voting people from all parties we have the idea of venturing into party politics,” he added in statements collected by Underlined.
Reed has been talking for several months with voters of all political persuasions who have felt distanced from the party they have supported in the most recent elections, or historically, with the idea of forming a new political space designed to “build bridges” without these people having to give up or betray their ideals or political beliefs.
They also seek that the people who join their proposal can debate healthily without resorting to insults or disqualifications.
The new political space will present itself “in February or March” of next year, but declined to provide further details.
“It is a sector with many people from the Front, with white voters, with voters from the Independent Party, with voters from the Cabildo [Abierto] and voters of the Colorado Party”, he maintained in statements given to Montevideo Portal.
And he added: “What thought unites us? The Colorados come with a batllista thought from the last century, to which I adhere”. Meanwhile, he said that this sector is located “from the center to the left-left.”

In addition to Haberkorn, the book’s presentation was attended by the economist Gabriel Odonne, but in the public there were characters from all over the spectrum, such as the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado; the mayor of Canelones, Yamandú Orsi; the president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala and the minister of the MSP, Daniel Salinas, among others.
“We should work hard to deepen the coincidences because the differences are there, they can be addressed any day. I think this meeting today was that synthesis, of building bridges, because pleasantly I met people I hadn’t seen for many years,” Read commented.
At the same event, Read confirmed that he will support Yamandú Orsi if he decides to pursue a political career beyond his mandate in the Canarian Commune.
