An ammonia leak of small proportions occurred this Wednesday in Havana It was controlled by specialized forces, according to official media reports on the island.
The escape took place in the refrigerators of the Comercializadora de Productos del Mar (Copmar), located on Avenida del Puerto, in the Cuban capital.
Directors of the entity, one of the 30 that make up the Fishing Industry Business Group, highlighted the effectiveness of the center’s preparation in preventing disasters and the immediate response of the Fire Commands, in accordance with an office of the Cuban News Agency (ACN) citing local media.
Indicates the report that in the control operation they intervened firemen from Command No. 1, from Old Havana, which arrived a few minutes after the escape occurred, and from Command 15 for Salvage and Rescue located on Zapata Street, in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.
Similarly, other forces of the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) and the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), which are involved in mitigating possible damage, adds the publication.
The ammonia leak did not pose a danger to the workers, who were evacuated as established in the disaster risk reduction plans. The incident also did not cause contamination to the surrounding areas, the note states.
José Ángel López Santiesteban, technologist and head of Refrigerator No. 1, explained that they went to the firefighters given the concentration of the gas, when the leak occurred inside a refrigerator, a totally closed place.
The manager added that the operation carried out to eradicate the leak offered the necessary guarantees so that the installation is already out of danger.
At the time of the incident, there were 40 tons of minced meat and 250 tons of chicken in the cold room, which were not at risk of contamination, according to the source. The very packaging of the products and the rapid action of the firefighters prevented these goods from being contaminated.
Controlled the escape, the next objective will be to move these products, according to a note from the local newspaper Tribune of Havana.
