MIAMI, United States. — The former president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias will sponsor the Cuban political prisoner and independent journalist Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, who was sentenced to five years in prison last July.
“I want to tell the Cuban regime that noble ends cannot be achieved with ignoble means. That with the torture and imprisonment of the men and women who oppose the regime, the voices of those who have lost their freedom in their fight against the dictatorship will not be silenced,” Arias said in a video shared on social networks by the lawyer and Venezuelan human rights activist Tamara Suju.
Arias’ support for the independent Cuban journalist responds to the initiative ‘Sponsor a political prisoner in the world’, promoted by the Casla Institute, of which Suju is executive director.
“For those of us who genuinely believe that democracy is a right of peoples, the time has passed to cover with fig leaves what we all know: Cuba is not a different democracy nor has it followed its own path chosen by the Cuban people. . Cuba is plain and simple a dictatorship, and that hurts those of us who love freedom”, expressed Arias in his speech.
Regarding the situation that the Cuban independent journalist is going through, Arias pointed out: “I have said it many times: political prisoners do not exist in democracies. In no free country does one go to prison for thinking differently. Those of us who live in democracy and freedom must raise our voices to ask for the release of Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca.”
“I am not going to shut up as long as human rights continue to be violated in Cuba. I am not going to shut up when the mere existence of a regime like the Cuban one is an affront to human dignity,” concluded the former president.
Recently, the famous Venezuelan singer-songwriter Ricardo Montaner announced the sponsorship of the Cuban rapper Maykel Osorbo, sentenced to nine years in prison for the alleged crimes of contempt, attack, public disorder and defamation of institutions and organizations, heroes and martyrs.
