CNDH advisers demand that Piedra adhere to recommendations

Seven of the 10 members of the advisory council of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) rejected the statement issued by this body on the National Electoral Institute (INE), in which it recommends its transformation, considering that it has the same history as the IFE and the former Federal Electoral Commission, autonomous bodies in name only.

After the statements against the INE were included in a statement on general recommendation 46/2022, regarding violations of fundamental guarantees perpetrated by the Mexican State between 1951 and 1965 –among them the right to democracy–, the councilors demanded that the president of the CNDH, Rosario Piedra Ibarra, adhere to the general recommendations approved by the advisory council, strictly in the approved language, without political interpretations regarding its contentsince “at no time did they endorse the transformation of the institute.

If the literalness of the document was not respected, they stated, this tool can become distorted and lose efficiency as a mechanism to guarantee human rights.

Meanwhile, while the CNDH remains silent in the face of criticism, the head of the fifth General Inspectorate, Raúl Ramírez Ramírez, responded on social networks to who feed ghosts and strengthen fictions against the commission, that general recommendation 46/2022 does not invade the sphere of competence of the INE, but rather guarantees the right to historical truth against repression of events not attributable to the institute, but to political actors of the time.

He stated that at no time does it touch on electoral issues, as the detractors have wanted to make it appear. it is a recommendation historical, because finally the relatives of the disappeared (in those years), who had been forgotten, will find a light on the path.

At no time were interpretations endorsed

The directors recognized in their position that in the aforementioned general recommendation, which was voted by the Consultative Council last April, recommending points are issued to various authorities, including the INE, but they emphasized that “at no time was it discussed or endorsed what the CNDH now interprets in its statement that it ‘recommends the transformation of the institute’ or that the IFE/INE be an autonomous body ‘only in name, partial instruments, of sabotage of the will of the people, which have only served to maintain vices that, for years, if not for centuries, have tainted our electoral processes’”.
