Aeroméxico company resumes its usual flights to Havana

OnCubaNews

After two years without carrying out operations in Cuba due to the pandemic of the COVID-19the company Aeroméxico resumed this Sunday its flights to Havanaaccording to official media on the island.

Shortly after landing on the airport José Martí of the ship of the airline-flag of Mexicothe ambassador of that country in Cuba, Miguel Díaz, affirmed that this resumption of operations is part of the effort made by both nations to improve the link between their capitals, according to a report of the Prensa Latina (PL) agency.

Similarly, the diplomat pointed out that the authorities of the two countries continue in the process of reestablishing maritime travel (both passengers and cargo) affected by the international health contingency, the media reports.

It also transpired that this Aeroméxico route will have a daily frequency for the transfer of 160 passengers, with the aim of opening more possibilities to the sightseeingfamily reunification and business trips and commercial issues.

For his part, the commercial director of Aeroméxico, Fernando Esqueda, explained that at this stage the company is focused on recovering the flow of regular travelers and the operating scenario prior to the pandemic, adds the publication.

He also noted that the Island is a highly consumed tourist destination by the Mexican public and expressed his satisfaction at being able to return to the Antillean nation.

Aeroméxico executives emphasize that with this reopening they reaffirm their commitment to continue expanding their connectivity network to unite Mexico with the most important destinations in the world.

Data offered by the airline indicates that last August it planned to reach an operation of almost 570 daily flights to 90 national and international routes.

Cuba limited its operations in the country with international airlines in order to control infections as much as possible since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation changed in November 2021 with the decision to reopen the borders to allow more fluid traffic of people to and from abroad, supported by the effectiveness of local vaccines to combat the disease.

Since then, many international airlines have resumed or increased their usual routes to various destinations on the Island, which has allowed a sustained increase in the arrival of visitors to the country.

However, the Cuban government recognized recently that it will not be possible to fulfill the initial plan to receive 2.5 million foreign visitors before the end of the year, a figure notably higher than that of the previous year, but far from the levels reached before the start of the pandemic.

According to the most recent estimates of the Ministry of Tourism, by the end of 2022 around 1,710,000 tourists would have arrived in Cuba.

Official statistics place tourism as the second most important sector for the formation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country, and occupies the same place among the sources of foreign currency income for the battered Cuban economy suffering a deep and prolonged crisisaggravated by the impact of the pandemic, the sanctions imposed by the US administration and the ineffectiveness of the measures taken internally to reverse the complex situation.
