Sustainable fishing, due highlighted by President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen together with the Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, as one of the main axes to promote the economy of Panama and the care of the oceans. This as part of the commitments of the country agenda with a view to the Our Ocean 2023 conference.
“To promote the responsible consumption of marine species and thereby contribute to the protection of species that are being threatened with extinction, the MarViva Foundation developed a practical tool that can be downloaded for free, called the Stoplight Guide for Responsible Consumption, where the species that are in the green and yellow categories can be consumed. Green can be consumed calmly, yellow in a moderate way and in the red category are species threatened with extinction or protected by law,” said Juan Posada, Mar Viva’s science manager.
He expressed that education is key so that those who take advantage of fishing resources realize that the belief that the oceans are an inexhaustible source of resources “is not true”, they are finite resources and we are overexploiting them.
On the other hand, the authority through the established laws and regulations must exercise the authority in surveillance and control to prevent illegal activities that threaten the resources that we must protect.
“Mangroves are very important for the protection of marine species, since they are breeding and breeding sites for both fish and invertebrates. Today their importance is known, because they are sites of protection, breeding and refuge, so to avoid illegal fishing and guarantee food security there are two very important elements, one of them is education and the other is surveillance and control of the activities that take place in the sea”, declared Posada.
