Mexico and the US would sign clean energy plan during Biden's visit to AMLO

AMLO and Biden met this year at the White House.

On Friday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador received the delegation led by the United States presidential special envoy for climate, John Kerry, at the Sonora Government Palace. The purpose of the meeting was to share with the authorities of that country Mexico’s vision for the transition to clean energy.

López Obrador explained that Sonora’s energy development plan contemplates the installation of five solar plants for the generation of electricity. Likewise, he mentioned that it seeks to attract investments in lithium, electromobility, semiconductors and clean energy.

“The Government of Mexico invests and works in the modernization of several key points in the state of Sonora to convert it into a state of generation of renewable and clean energy,” he said.

The president of Mexico pointed out that they hope to replicate in other parts of the state and the country the modern project of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic plant, which in 2027 will be the most important installation in Latin America for the production of solar energy, and which will increase self-sufficiency energy, both from Sonora and Baja California.

The governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, presented the policies and sustainability plans that are being worked on in the entity.

The state president affirmed that “the materialization of the Sonora Plan will have a very significant impact on the economic future of the state and that, in addition to supplying energy to the people of Sonora, they will be contributing to the reduction of the effects of global warming.”

He proposed that the Sonora Plan be presented as one of the main contributions at the COP27 meeting to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18 of this year.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, highlighted the importance that this plan will have for the economic development of the country.

The official stressed that once again Mexico and the United States have the common vision of rapidly growing solar, geothermal, wind and hydraulic energy.

The foreign minister highlighted the results of the meeting and also the relevance of the common actions between both governments.

For his part, the general director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Octavio Romero Oropeza, presented the plan to reduce methane gas emissions in the exploration and production processes in the oil industry in Mexico.

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, María Luisa Albores González, presented the actions under her responsibility and the estimate for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which will also be presented at COP27.

John Kerry congratulated President López Obrador and the different dependencies of the Government of Mexico for the efforts made and future plans in environmental matters and renewable energy.

In that sense, he stated that “Mexico and the United States must do everything in their power to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius,” and specified that in recent years there has been significant evidence of the growing impact of the climate crisis on the planet, and that the governments of Presidents López Obrador and Joe Biden will continue North American cooperation to address this highly important issue.
