Cuban and Uruguayan authorities hold official talks on migration issues

Cuban authorities and Uruguay held this Friday in the city of Montevideo the third round of talks on migration issues between the two countries.

The dialogue in the Uruguayan capital was led by Cecilia Otegui, deputy director general of Consular Affairs and Linkage of the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, and Ernesto Soberón, general director of Consular Affairs and Attention to Cubans Resident Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Island. , As reported the latter.

In accordance with the MINREXthe work session “was developed in a cordial and cooperative atmosphere” and during it “the behavior of the migratory flow between both countries was evaluated”.

The official note from the Cuban Foreign Ministry also points out that both parties “emphasized the importance of this type of meeting”, while expressing “the will to strengthen the operational and comprehensive mechanisms of bilateral collaboration in the migratory, consular and confronting phenomena such as human trafficking and illegal migrant smuggling”.

They also agreed on the relevance of “guaranteeing a regular, orderly and safe flow of travelers”.

As a result of the meeting, Otegui and Soberón signed the Resulting Minutes of the talks, according to a report by the Cuban News Agency (ACN)which did not detail the content of the document.

Cuba has been going through an intense migratory wave in recent months, at a time when the country is suffering a severe economic crisis. Although most of the island’s migrants seek to reach the United States —where some 200,000 arrived in the last fiscal year—, some of them also go to European and Latin American countries, including Uruguay, where there is a growing community of Cubans.
