Díaz-Canel highlights Fidel Castro’s imprint on science in Cuba

Havana, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel today highlighted the imprint of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, on the scientific development of Cuba, on the occasion of the celebration of Science Day on the island.

In his Twitter profile, the president recalled a phrase pronounced by Fidel Castro on January 15, 1960, which reflects the aspirations in this area of the nascent transformation process that began a year earlier with the rebel victory against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952- 1959).

“The future of our country must necessarily be a future of men of science, it must be a future of men of thought, because it is precisely what we are sowing the most…”, expressed Díaz-Canel in his message on that social network, evoking Fidel Castro.

We can be sure of one thing and that is that we are starting, and of another thing we can be sure and that is that we will also reach the goal, Fidel added on that date, which 30 years later was chosen to recognize the work of the workers of Science and celebrate the country’s achievements in that area.

This year the Cuban capital is the headquarters of the national event for the anniversary. Havana has a consolidated scientific pole made up of 86 research centers, 34 Innovation Development Units, 15 technological scientific service entities, and six high-tech companies, five of them belonging to BioCubaFarma.

It also has a qualified staff made up of 18,945 professionals, including 3,668 researchers, 1,301 Doctors in Sciences, 4,387 Masters in Sciences and a reserve of 774 experts, among other strengths.

Among its main results in 2021, this capital hosted the development, scaling and production of the Sovereign immunogens against Covid-19, designed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute, and the Mambisa vaccine candidate, from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
