Ecuador added 4,793 new COVID-19 infections this Friday and accumulated 593,664 historical positives in the pandemic, according to the latest epidemiological report released by the Ministry of Public Health.
The death toll confirmed with covid-19 torose to 24,281, that is, 27 more than Thursday’s record, to which are added 9,908 probable with the disease, giving a total of 34,189 deaths since 2020.
The year started with 551,620 confirmed cases with the virus, that is, the increase to date has been about 37,171. Last Tuesday, results were added that were dammed from an underreporting of 2021 and that resulted in 4,873 additional positives to the infections that were known and that is causing the new rebound.
The number of deaths, confirmed and probable carriers of the virus started this year at 33,682 and today stands at 34,189. However, to this figure are added 398 deaths that Health added as part of the update of a sub-registry dating from 2021.
The Andean province ofand Pichincha, whose capital is Quito, accumulates the largest number of infections, with 213,563 positives, 2,049 new cases compared to the previous record, followed by the coastal Guayas, with Guayaquil header, with 94,261 after adding an additional 661.
Later appear the provinces of Manabí (40,235), Azuay (30,787), El Oro (28,426), Loja (20,113), Imbabura (19,580), Tungurahua (17,633), Los Rios (14,788), Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (13,652) and Cotopaxi (13,542).
By cities, the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, stands out, which is the most affected by covid-19 with 197,626 infections, followed by Guayaquil with 67,808 positives, where its authorities have warned of the growing number of daily deaths that reaches ten.
Cities such as Cuenca (23,651), Machala (14,016), Loja (13,383), Ambato (13,149), Portoviejo (13,058), Santo Domingo (11,984) and Ibarra (10,361) follow, according to the official report.
The escalation of coivd-19 cases worries the country’s health authorities. According to the minister of Cheers Ximena Garzon, “we have a spike in infections that we had not seen since the beginning of the outbreak.”
The health minister explained that the positivity of the antigen tests reaches 50%, while the CRP reach 47% and “possibly it will increase by over 50%”, although he considered that the severity of symptoms and death can be reduced with the vaccine.
Precisely, the vaccination plan against covid-19 in Ecuador, as of January 12, indicates that 13.9 million first doses, 12.9 million second doses and 1.7 million booster doses have been applied.
The mayor of Guayaquil, Cythia Viteri, warned that in the coastal city daily deaths have increased to 10.6 per day, and that 6,300 positives are reported per week, which has led to the mandatory implementation of vaccination cards in urban transport.
To encourage vaccination, viteri authorized a 5% discount on property taxes for those who receive their third dose.
