Victims of protests in Bocas del Toro, will finally have their life pension

Later After 12 years of crying out for justice, the victims of the protests in Bocas del Toro, in 2010, will finally have their lifetime pension of $900 per month, after this Thursday, October 27, Law 333 of October 27 was promulgated in the Official Gazette. October 2022 “That modifies Law 28 of 2015, on the monitoring of measures in favor of the victims affected in the events that occurred from July 6 to 10, 2010 in the district of Changuinola, province of Bocas del Toro, and dictates other provisions.

The modifications to Law 28 of 2015 were presented by the Ministry of the Presidency last August and according to Vice Minister Carlos García, who presented the document before the National Assembly, it constitutes an act of social justice in favor of Panamanian citizens who were victims of events that must not be repeated in this country.
In its first article, the new law establishes a special lifetime pension of nine hundred balboas (B/.900.00) for the victims affected by the events of July 2010 in Changuinola, province of Bocas del Toro, which will be reviewed every three years. by the Monitoring Commission.

It adds that the beneficiaries of the pension are duly identified in the Agreement between those affected in the province of Bocas del Toro, unions and the national government, dated August 29, 2011 (Annex I), duly endorsed by the Executive Branch.
Another important modification is the one made to article 5 of Law 28 of 2015, which refers to what will happen to the pension in the event of the death of the beneficiary and establishes who will be entitled from the date of death.
According to the enacted Law, the Social Security Fund, the payer of this support, will have three calendar months, counted from its entry into force, to prepare a procedure that will include the requirements that must be provided along with the application, for the determination of the link with the deceased and with the children of the deceased, the distribution of benefits, among other aspects for their granting.
The validity of the economic-social support program for those affected identified in Annexes II and III of Law 28 of 2015 is also extended until the year 2032, provided that it is determined that the health of the beneficiary has been affected or has suffered damage. as a result of the events of July 2010.
It underlines that this economic and social support will be four hundred balboas (B/.400.00) per month, and will be granted provided that there is a prior evaluation by the Interinstitutional Medical Evaluating Commission.
