A few hours ago, an audiovisual record went viral where some gendarmes beat a group of inmates from the Puente Alto prison with lumas and kicked them heavily. The incident occurred after a fight between inmates that left one of them dead.
As a result of this, the Minister of Justice, Marcela Ríos, confirmed a complaint before the Public Ministry and requested that an “immediate” internal investigation be carried out.
“As the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, we have become aware of an act of the most serious connotation. We are deeply moved by the images we have seen,” he said.
Along the same lines, he revealed that “I met first thing in the morning with the National Director of the Gendarmerie this morning. We have requested an immediate internal summary and we have also requested that a complaint be made to the Public Ministry so that all the facts of the that we have become aware of.”
On the other hand, he stated that he asked “the Undersecretary of Justice and the Director of the Gendarmerie that they can immediately visit the prison in Puente Alto. The authorities are already on the premises to be able to inspect and verify the conditions of private persons. of freedom”.
“For our government it is unacceptable, and I want to repeat this, unacceptable, this type of behavior and treatment of people who are deprived of liberty and who have to be treated with the utmost dignity,” he added.
Preliminarily, the Gendarmerie explained that “in the context of the operation carried out to identify the person responsible, there was an attack by officials that does not comply with the institutional regulations on the use of the outside. In this regard, an administrative summary was instructed, where the prosecutor will define the administrative responsibilities and will take the pertinent measures to the facts that are investigated”.
“This type of behavior is not admissible in the Gendarmerie, for which we reiterate our commitment to the protection and guarantee of the human rights of persons deprived of liberty. The institution rejects any action that is apart from the normative guidelines, such as those appreciated in the images broadcast from the Puente Alto prison”, concluded the Gendarmerie.
