One of the most famous attractions in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Sugarloaf cable car turns 110 today (27). Since it was created, it has received approximately 50 million visitors and is the oldest working cable car in the world.
Located in an important environmental conservation area, between two mountains covered by the Atlantic Forest, Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar has an initial stretch that connects Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca, in an extension of 528 meters, 227 meters high. Another 750 meters separate Morro da Urca from Pão de Açúcar, the highest point being 396 meters above sea level.
Throughout the day, visitors who have a birthday on the same date as the cable car will be able to pick up their tickets for free at the box office.
“We are very proud to complete 110 years, keeping alive the values that are part of our history and that have allowed us to get here, such as safety, innovation, sustainability and passion for enchanting”, said the CEO of Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar, Sandro Fernandes.

This Thursday, visitors will receive a button with the 110th anniversary seal of Parque Bondinho and will be able to enjoy, with the whole family, Circo Macaco Prego, with musical theater, workshops and games with the theme of the attraction’s anniversary. The action will take place from 2 pm to 3:40 pm, at Mirante Maria Ercília, in Morro da Urca. In the Jardim dos Discos space, from 1 pm to 6 pm, visitors will be able to make videos for social networks on a 360° platform, which captures images in slow motion.
There will also be a cake distribution to the public and an atmosphere with DJ Tommax, from 4 pm to 7 pm, at Mirante Maria Ercília, to celebrate, with the best sunset in the city, plus this milestone for Parque Bondinho.
The attraction received a new song as a gift, composed by Bossa Nova icon Roberto Menescal, in partnership with singer Cris Delanno and Alex Moreira. Call of the cable car the song will be launched in the presentation of Roberto Menescal and Cris Delanno, this Thursday, open to the public that is present.
“This song was born out of the immense admiration that I, Cris and Alex Moreira have for Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar, the city’s tourist icon. There is already music for Corcovado, several for Rio de Janeiro, for the beaches, but not for the Park. The lyrics remind me of the climb to the park. Of everything I’ve written recently, this is my favorite work,” Menescal said.

The program commemorating the 110th anniversary of Parque Bondinho will continue for the next few months. In November, the immersive Time Capsule exhibition will be inaugurated, which will allow the public to revisit important moments in the park’s history, as well as offering a vision of its future. Also planned is the opening of a zip line that will connect Morros da Urca and Pão de Açúcar.
“Parque Bondinho has its history connected to the city of Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of its foundation, when engineer Augusto Ramos had the pioneering idea of connecting Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca and Morro Pão de Açúcar by a cable car. This visionary initiative made it possible for more than 50 million people to see the spectacular 360° view of Rio and live incredible moments up here”, said Fernandes.
