‘Toto’ Álvarez on the situation of IFARHU: ‘The Law gives these powers to grant aid, so criminally the complaints are not going to be very successful’

José ‘Toto’ Álvarez, president of the PAÍS Party, analyzed the morning of this Thursday, October 27, on the approval in the second debate last night, of the General State Budget 2023, corruption, education, among other current national issues.

“The government program of ‘Nito’ Cortizo spoke that education was going to be a star, but teachers are heard protesting and now there is a scandal in this institution for low-income students and also rewarding excellence,” he said.

He pointed out that the government has failed in one of the most beloved institutions by Panamanian students, which is IFARHU.

«They politicized it, because those who built it did it, they saw it in the sense to reward excellence, it does not matter if you are the son of a millionaire, a person who has no resources, because the objective is to reward academic excellence. No matter how much money the student has, it is a source of pride to say that he or she has received a scholarship, because of the academic index », he expressed.

He argued that the future of the investigation is that the director of the institution will rely on what the Law says, which is so broad. “The Law gives many powers to the director to grant this economic aid, so I think that criminally he will not have much success with the complaints that have been filed against him.”

“We know that he is a very humble person, but what the public is waiting for is that he be brave and say that he called me for this, the other, rather than seeing him in jail,” he said.
