The Mexican authorities confirmed the arrest this Thursday of 14 Cubans who “could not prove their legal stay” after operations by immigration agents in the state of Veracruz and elements of the Navy in the city of Cancun.
Seven of them were located on the Córdoba-Veracruz highway, in a truck where a total of 69 migrants were traveling.
The nationals of the Island were transported together with 56 Nicaraguans and six Hondurans and were destined for the port of Veracruz and from there they would be taken to the state of Tamaulipas, bordering the United States.
After an accident occurred on January 11 in the mountainous area of Veracruz, a truck marked with false logos of the state company Diconsa, in which 38 Central Americans were transported, “the National Migration Institute ordered a review of all cargo units and this allowed this new group to be located at the checkpoint on the federal highway when passing the Cuitláhuac toll booth,” he told 14ymedio a source of migration.
The driver of the cargo unit and his assistant were made available to the Attorney General’s Office. “The driver declared that he did not know where the migrants got on,” said the immigration agent.
The other seven Cubans were arrested in Cancun, in an operation led by sailors and municipal agents in the boulevard near the Plaza Kukulcán shopping center, after the undocumented immigrants were captured by the video surveillance cameras of the C5 Security Complex.
The rafters arrived in a boat with the name of the palmiche and license plate BB5543F, which they abandoned at kilometer 12.5 of Marlín beach, where a hotel is being built. “At the time of being intercepted, they did not show any documentation for their legal stay, so they were informed that they would be transferred to a migration center,” the personal newspaper of the State Secretariat of Public Security stressed to this newspaper.
According to figures from the INM, the state of Quintana Roo has become a route for the illegal entry of Cubans in recent years. Between October and December 2021, 29 rafters who arrived at Isla Mujeres were detained. Of 60 Cubans detained in that same year, 45 were deported and 15 received legal advice to obtain refuge.
At the end of December municipal police officers They placed seven rafters under guard after stepping on land in the eastern part of Isla Mujeres. The migrants joined the humanitarian visa program and will be able to stay in Mexico for a year.
Meanwhile, this Friday, agents from the Honduran Police Directorate of Investigations arrested four coyotes who were transporting 59 migrants from Cuba and Nicaragua in the municipality of Trojes, on the border with Nicaragua.
Coyotes of Honduran origin took Cubans and Nicaraguans from Trojes to the border with Guatemala to continue their route to the United States, according to data provided by the Honduran National Police. At the time of their arrest, they were assured of cash, four mobile phones and four Toyota brand vehicles.
The migrants were taken to the office of the National Migration Institute located in the department of El Paraíso, where they remain detained. More than 3,000 irregular immigrants, mostly Cubans, were arrested in Honduras last year for entering illegally, reported the EFE news agency.
