MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban regime spokesman Javier Gómez Sánchez justified in an article published in The Jiribilla and reproduced by other official means that the Government of the Island has accepted the 2 million dollars donated by the United States Agency for Development (USAID) after Hurricane Ian passed through the western region of the country .
“The question floated in the air, moved in networks and made at a press conferenceabout why the Cuban government, which on other occasions has fought and denounced projects financed by USAID, now accepts an amount of money from that same entity,” the official spokesperson wrote.
“The answer is very simple: now, for the first time in a long time, USAID – whose acronym makes a play on words with aidwhich in Spanish means help—performs in Cuba the true role it should have, as other international collaboration agencies practice,” he replied to himself.
Returning to the speech of the regime against USAID, Sánchez Gómez said that “the scholarship programs and projects of different types, which at some point have been confronted [por el Gobierno cubano]do not constitute assistance or aid, but acts of interference for subversion and regime change.
Likewise, he charged USAID for donations to civil society on the Island and groups opposed to Castroism.
“In the last two decades, it is estimated that the total figure managed by the agency for political financing in Cuba is around 300 million dollars. During the administration of Donald Trump, according to the Cuban Money Project website, some 50 groups of different types of political operations in Cuba received money from USAID,” he wrote.
He also criticized the United States government for only “offering technical assistance by telephone” to Cuba during the fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base.
Meanwhile, regarding the 2 million donated after Ian’s passage, he said: “There is nothing left but to welcome the small palliative sent to the blocked country by the same ones who block it. When the use of the last of the 2 million dollars has been accounted for, and no one remembers the headlines they generated, the blockade and the other USAID for Cuba will continue to be there.”
On Tuesday of last week, the United States Government announced that it would deliver 2 million dollars in humanitarian aid to Cuba for the recovery of communities devastated by the Hurricane Ianthrough USAID.
A statement of the Department of State signed by Ned Price, spokesman for that federal entity, indicates that the aid will be delivered by independent non-governmental organizations “that work directly with Cubans whose communities were devastated by the storm.”
“The United States will work with trusted independent organizations that operate in the country and have a long-standing presence in communities affected by the hurricanes. We are currently reviewing requests from organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to provide this assistance,” the statement added.
For their part, the Cuban authorities thanked and accepted the aid but they avoided mentioning USAID.
