ACODECO warns that penalties for failing to comply with the quality of rice could reach up to 25 thousand balboas

The Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (Acodeco), began collecting samples from 72 brands of national milled rice, to once again carry out quality tests on this important grain in the basic food basket.

According to the technical regulation DGNTI-COPANIT 75-2002, special rice must contain at least 94.5% whole grains, 5% broken grains and 0.5% small rice. The first class rice, 70% whole grains, 25% broken grains and 5% rice.

As is public knowledge, Acodeco carried out a few months ago, in its Metrology Laboratory, with the presence of a representative of each brand, the quality analysis of the national milled rice, in its different varieties. In this first technical verification, it was detected that 72 brands (33 first class and 39 special) did not comply with the minimum established parameters. More than B/.250 thousand balboas were applied in fines.

In this regard, the general manager of Acodeco, Jorge Quintero Quirós, pointed out that those economic agents who fail to comply with the technical regulations in this new verification of the quality of rice will be sanctioned with fines of 25,000 balboas. “We are going to verify that the quality of the rice strictly corresponds to what is advertised,” said Quintero.
