MIAMI, United States. — The United States government criticized the lack of freedom of the press in Cuba and called on the island’s regime to respect the human rights of citizens.
Through its Embassy in Havana, Washington shared statistics released by the NGO Article 19 about the repression suffered by independent Cuban journalists.
“The NGO Article 19 has recorded 125 acts against 51 journalists this year in Cuba, including 45 arrests at home, 14 arbitrary detentions and 16 Internet outages,” the diplomatic headquarters said on social networks.
The publication adds that the Cuban regime “must comply with its DD obligations. H H. and respect press freedom.

Conditions for independent journalism in Cuba have worsened following the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021.
According to the NGO Article 19 itself, between the second half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, 358 attacks against journalists and activists were recorded in Cuba.
“It is a lesson to civil society in Cuba, to independent journalism,” he declared in September to CubaNet Julio César Colín, coordinator of the Central America and the Caribbean Article 19 Program.
Article 19 posted a report on the impact of the 11J protests on the exercise of freedom of expression in Cuba. He himself realizes that the journalists and the independent journalism projects that operated within the Island have been the great victims of the state repression.
“Many people have left the Island due to threats from State Security. Exile in exchange for conserving freedom,” said Colín.
