More than two months after it was extinguished great fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Basein western Cuba, recovery work continues at the scene of the incident.
Thanks to these tasks, more than three thousand tons of steel from tanks and pipes affected by the fire last August have been recovered to date, according to a report from the agency Latin Press (PL).
Julio Antonio Sardiñas, director of Quality and Communication of the Recycling Business Group (GER), told the newspaper that this volume corresponds to three of the four damaged tanks and conductive piping systems belonging to the Base, as well as other raw materials, and pointed out that his recovery is due to “uninterrupted work for more than 60 days” in the Matanzas industrial zone.
Sardiñas pointed out that the fundamental objective of the works that are being undertaken there is “to leave the land completely clean” and that for this purpose progress is being made in the dismantling of the burned tanks. However, he noted that the number of raw materials to be recovered still exceeds 500 tons.
The manager, quoted by PLhighlighted the contribution of many people and entities in the reconstruction of the Base and announced that before the end of October they must finish the dismantling of tanks and the extraction of scrap metal and steel sheets, while the demolitions in the works will continue. civilians.
In addition, he explained that part of the raw materials obtained will be used in various entities on the island. In this regard, he pointed out that a group of steel sheets will be destined for the Azcuba Azucarero Business Group for the repair of plants, while others will go to the industries steel mills of Antillana de Acero, in Havana, and the Rolling Mill in the eastern province of Las Tunas.

The fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base began on August 5 and was declared extinguished a week later. The incident left a balance of 17 dead and a hundred injured, and burned four of the eight fuel tanks of the largest facility of its kind on the Island.
The Cuban authorities explained that an electrical discharge hit one of the tanks and then the flames spread to the other three, causing strong explosions, with flames of several tens of meters.
