The United States Coast Guard repatriates 33 Cubans

(EFE) .- The United States Coast Guard repatriated 33 Cubans on Thursday who had tried to reach the country’s coasts illegally and were intercepted in three operations carried out in the Florida Keys, the institution reported.

The first operation took place in the afternoon / night of last Friday, after a Miami Coast Guard crew alerted the guards of the Key West sector about a rustic boat located about 80 miles (128 km) from Key West , in the extreme south of the state.

The institution maintains “an active presence across the Straits of Florida and the Mona and Barlovento passes to help save lives by deterring dangerous travel.”

The second was also carried out on Friday when the federal agency spotted another rustic boat about 60 miles (96 km) from Marquesas Key, while the third interception occurred last Monday when a precarious boat was spotted about 12 miles (19 km) away. from Cayo Largo.

All three interceptions were carried out due to “concerns about the safety of life at sea,” the Coast Guard said.

“We urge people not to go to sea in unsafe vessels,” Miami Air Base Commander Jessica Davila said in the statement.

So far this fiscal year, that is, since October 1, 2021, the Coast Guard has rescued 557 Cubans at sea, very close to the total of 838 for the entire fiscal period 2021 and well above the 49 of fiscal year 2020.

According to figures provided by the US authorities, in fiscal year 2019 there were 313 Cuban immigrants intercepted, and in 2018 the number reached 259, while in 2017 and 2016 1,468 and 5,396 Cubans were intercepted at sea, respectively.
