Santo Domingo. The Federation of Teachers Associations of the UASD (FAPROUASD), at a press conference, announced that in response to the refusal of the university authorities, to their fair claim of indexation of travel expenses, it is proposed to expand the protest movement, integrating all the directive and grassroots organizations of the union.
They declared that the total teaching strike is maintained in the 19 regional campuses, centers and sub-centers. That already entered the second week.
Similarly, the direction of FAPROUASD has convened for this Tuesday, October 25, the meeting of the Superior Council of Directives, with an expanded character to all the directors of the 26 associations of faculties, campuses, regional centers and retirees.
¨There we intend to expand the demands, such as guaranteeing the application of salary indexation in a pending 15%, according to the agreement signed between the MESCYT, on behalf of the government, the rectory and the university unions, in February of the year 2021.¨, highlighted the teacher Pastor de la Rosa, president of FAPROUASD.
In this sense, they advanced that in this Tuesday’s session of the expanded Higher Council of Directives, the call for the General Assembly of all teachers could be approved, to approve a plan of struggle that involves all teachers.
Likewise, the university union denounced the breach of most of the commitments of the agreement by the central government, represented by the Minister of MESCYT, Dr. Franklin García Fermín.
He recalled that among the demands agreed at that time was an initial salary increase of 10% that was applied from February with university funds, leaving a 30% increase pending, which Minister Fermín promised to manage with government. Of which only 15% was applied in January 2022.
They insisted that accumulated inflation must be added to what is pending, which according to conservative figures from the Central Bank itself this year could be around 9%.
The salary equalization of retired teachers and employees who receive miserable salaries, which are not even enough for the medicines for the treatments they are forced to take, is still not applied.
They reminded the Government and the legislators, that at the moment that they are defining the Budget for the year 2023, they must have pending compliance with the salary indexation commitment with the UASD unions.
“From this moment we declare ourselves in permanent mobilization until we obtain a clear commitment from the university authorities and President Luis Abinader to comply with the agreement,” they stressed.
Finally, they called on the teachers to be attentive to the calls of their union, whose directive will be in permanent session planning and guiding.
Likewise, they said that they will initiate a coordination process with the other university associations and unions in the country, which is also suffering the effects of inflation.
