Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ran as leader of the Conservative Party some four days after Liz Truss stepped down as UK Prime Minister. Sunak’s main rival, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew moments before and said that she would back him
Rishi Suniak, former Prime Minister for the Economy of the United Kingdom, was elected this Monday, October 24, as the new leader of the Conservative Party after his rival, Penny Mordaunt, who held the Defense portfolio, decided to step aside in the race for the Tory leadership minutes before officially announcing them as candidates for the position.
Mordaunt sent a statement through his social networks in which he assured that the parliamentarians were chosen to work for their country and from whatever role they play. He assured that these are currently “unprecedented” times that the United Kingdom is going through and that therefore “certainty” is needed to navigate the delicate path that lies ahead.
“As a result, we have now elected our next Prime Minister. This decision is historic and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support,” he wrote.

While Rishi Suniak is expected to take office on Tuesday 25 October as UK Prime Minister, Mordaunt has joined the so-called “1922 Committee”, also known as the Conservative Private Members Committee. From here he assured that he will support the new leader of the party and the country.
This committee has several powers, including playing a key role in the election of the party leader. It happened previously with Boris Johnson and with Liz Truss, who tendered her resignation after meeting with the Chairman of the Committee, Sir Graham Brady.

This internal body of the ‘tories’ was formed in 1923 (by parliamentarians who were elected in 1922, hence the name) and represents the opinions of the parliamentary bases of the Conservative Party before the leader of the formation, generally also Prime Minister of the Kingdom Kingdom or leader of the opposition. It is formed by the ‘tory’ parliamentary group in the House of Commons. Made up of the Conservative members of Parliament’s back bench, it meets weekly while Parliament is in session to discuss its views independently of those of the front bench.
For Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, the fact that Sunak is going to be prime minister is a “positive” move because he believes he is the one with the most experience to lead the country and called him “intelligent and talented.”
This new election of a leader in the United Kingdom comes after Liz Truss announced his resignation on Thursday, October 20, just 45 days after taking office.
