Uruguay, on the recommendation of the World Health Organization, created by law in 2007 the National Road Safety Unit (UNASEV) to regulate and control activities related to traffic and road safety throughout the national territory.

Law 18,113 passed in May 2007, establishes the guiding principles of the National Road Safety Unit (UNASEV). Six months later, Law 18,191 or the Uruguayan “Traffic and Road Safety in the national territory” law would follow. Later, it would advance with laws 19,061 and 19,824, called 2nd. and 3rd. Traffic Law, which would strengthen a robust regulatory body.

Given in our country, the implementation of the Single National Driving Permit (PUNC), which will be complemented by the “permit by points” modality, this will be the motto of the National Road Safety Week, which will run from 24 to 28 October and within this framework, the Municipality of Montevideo will carry out various activities. The programming includes talks, workshops, presentation of statistics and projects that aim to improve the safety of pedestrians and drivers.

The opening of the week’s activities will be on Monday, October 24 with a call for advisors and road safety referents, made up of members of the municipalities of Montevideo. In this meeting, the different actions carried out in the neighborhoods will be presented.

Both schoolchildren and teachers will receive general information on traffic regulations and behaviors that promote safe coexistence, in a format that takes into account the specific characteristics of each educational center.

There will also be theoretical-practical workshops for City Hall staff, and for those who work at the Burgues, La Paloma, Géminis, Durán and Volver a la Vida recycling plants.

The grid of activities includes the presentation of data on road accidents in Montevideo at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism of the University of the Republic, with the participation of students from the Basic Urban project.

On Thursday the 27th, from 10:00 to 14:00, there will be a checkpoint for child restraint systems on the community esplanade. The event is organized together with the Gonzalo Rodríguez Foundation.

On Saturday 29, starting at 12 noon, the neighborhood pedestrian project on Venancio Benavídez street will be presented to neighbors.

The closing of the week will be on Sunday 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the esplanade, where the public will be able to experiment with the crash simulator.
