The goal of Santo Domingo 2050 Initiative is to make the Sustainable Development Strategy of the province of Santo Domingo with the purpose of promoting the economic drive and multiple projects but in an organized manner. To achieve this, the Master Plan.
For example, companies located in the center of the city of Santo Domingo and that constitute large sources of environmental pollution, traffic obstruction, heavy vehicle traffic and other ills, would be relocated to land near the Santo Domingo Beltway, in the portions of land dedicated to those purposes.
Sunday MatthiasDeputy Minister of Territorial Planning and Regional Development of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPYD), anticipates that the project will not exclude anyone, on the contrary, it will be developed with the participation of the councils and the private sector, as well as the social entities.
There is already a development commission chaired by the MEPYD, with the participation of the Presidency of the Republic, the Executing Unit of State Land Titling and others, so an executive director will soon have to be selected.
It points out that “all cultural, industrial, environmental, agroecological, housing, agricultural, hotel, bar, green spaces, waste, among others, initiatives will be included in the Master Plan and in the Provincial Development Strategy.”

Get rid of the clutter
The Government seeks that once and for all a structure is not built in the province of Santo Domingo without first taking into account the existing regulations, a task that corresponds to local governments to avoid, for example, that agricultural vocation territories are used to build homes, industries and other types of structures.
The initiative launched by the president Louis Abinader takes the Santo Domingo Ring Road as a model, which would prevent what has happened on the country’s main highways and highways from happening on that road, such as the Duarte Highway, Seis de Noviembre, Las Américas and others.
example in view
Due to the lack of regulations or failure to comply with the provisions, the Government currently invests more than RD$5,000 million in expropriations of the section of the kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway to the entrance of the municipality of Los Alcarrizos to make way for the extension of line 2 of the Metro.
Matías indicates that the model of informality and indiscriminate occupation of the land would be eliminated with Santo Domingo 2050since sustainable development seeks to guarantee that human activities are carried out based on criteria, not that everyone settles where they want and does what they want.
It indicates that another of the situations that the Government intends to avoid is that human settlements continue to occur on slopes, ravines and riverbanks, due to the fact that later large sums of money must be disposed of in the evictions and the provision of services to human conglomerates. , among other situations.
“It is projected that the Beltway can serve to relocate land for companies that are in urban centers and that generate negative environmental impacts, so there are many. They could very well be taken out of the city and located in the surroundings of that road, it would be a gain for the population”, he points out.
He maintains that the Development Commission will be the one that will indicate the guidelines on the territorial ordering that will be given together with the municipalities, those responsible, according to the Constitution of the Republic, for regulating the use of land.
The official reveals that the Vice Ministry of Territorial Planning and Regional Development has already completed the route for the development of all the commitments that must be assumed, so that unit has to present in the coming days the Provincial Development Strategy.
This means, he says, that technical personnel will be recruited, professionals specialized in industry issues, sustainable development management and planning, in addition to a great articulation of the different government institutions with the private sector and civil society.
The administrative and functional structure of the development unit, which will have to coordinate the strategy and actions that will begin at the beginning of next year, has yet to be approved.
He estimates that before next June they would have defined all the planning instruments, so that the Treasury and the Budget make the corresponding forecasts.
Census, of great value
Among the challenges, he mentions that in each municipality urban rehabilitation processes will be carried out, study the territorial dynamics, cartography and create different clusters, such as tourism, agriculture, industry and environment, among others. The territories most threatened by floods are already under way, while thematic maps are being prepared, in which the next National Population and Housing Census will help decisively. He believes that the Census will be of great value to Santo’s strategy
Sunday 2050, because it will define the sociodemographic dynamicsnot only in this demarcation, but throughout the country.
