The bench of Free Peru affirmed that the Organization of American States (OAS) “must seek a solution” to the current political crisis in the country through the strengthening of democratic channels.
Through a statement, he indicated that the agency’s mission has to give its point of view in reference to the actions of Congress during the administration of the President of the Republic, peter castle.
“In the framework of the defense of democracy, the OAS must rule on the anti-democratic actions carried out by a sector of the Congress of the Republic, which refuses to respect the popular will reflected in the 2021 General Elections.”he pointed.
In this sense, he stressed that the Inter-American Democratic Charter aims to preserve democracy and autonomy in the powers of the State.
“In accordance with article 6 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, it must promote and encourage the broadest participation of citizens, in this sense, speak out against the restrictive measures that limit the will of Peruvians to access the New Constituent Assembly, via the Constituent Assembly. ”he underlined.
As recalled, the Permanent Council of the OAS approved the request made by the Government of Peru so that the Inter-American Democratic Charter is activated and a visit is made to monitor the situation in the country.
During the session at the request of the president peter castlethe proposal made by the Permanent Representation of Peru before the OAS was evaluated, where it was proposed to accept all the points of the request made by the Peruvian Government.
With this, the OAS approved the creation of a commission that will carry out a visit to the country, at the same time that it made an exhortation to solve the political crisis in the country in a preventive manner and through dialogue.
