The Colo Colo was consecrated this Sunday, in the absence of two dates to the end, champion of the Chilean Soccer League of 2022 by defeating bottom team Coquimbo Unido 2-0, reaching their thirty-third national title.

Colo Colo, the most popular team in Chile, added 59 points that are unattainable for the second, Ñublense (48 units) with which he secured the title, which also allows him to access a ticket for the group stage of the Copa Libertadores-2023 as Chile 1.

The title goals were scored by Argentine attacker Juan Martín Lucero and his compatriot Agustín Bouzat. Meanwhile, Coquimbo suffers a fall that keeps him as bottom of the tournament with 23 points.

“We are happy with everything we have achieved, we maintained a good level since the beginning of the year
we have done everything well throughout the tournament and… we are champions”, said Lucero at the end of the match.

The Colocolino team did not receive the cup after the match against Coquimbo Unido due to security issues. Fans of the white club were prohibited from entering the Coquimbo stadium, in the north of the country, and a strong police control was set up on the outskirts to prevent them from approaching the sports venue.

The trophy will be awarded on the twenty-ninth date, when he receives O’Higgins at his stadium and with his fans next Sunday.

While the players melted into hugs amid shouts of “go champion!” after the final whistle, in Santiago dozens of fans celebrate the title with flags in Plaza Baquedano, epicenter of Chilean sports celebrations.

– The most winning –

With 33 local titles, the Cacique remains the most successful team in local soccer,
followed by its arch-rival Universidad de Chile (18) and Universidad Católica (15) who could not defend their status as four-time champion.

In addition, Colo Colo is the only Chilean team to win the Copa Libertadores, in 1991.

The last time Colo Colo reached a title was five years ago. Since then he had lousy campaigns and was even on the verge of relegation in 2020.

The arrival of the Argentine-Bolivian coach Gustavo Quinteros gave new energy to the club he arrived at in 2020 to save it from falling to the First B and then he was in charge of forming a squad with which two years later he was able to shout champion.

Even the good campaign of Quinteros with Colo Colo has made other teams like the Independiente of Argentina tempt him to leave the Chilean champion.
