Teachers, representatives and students of Maturín come together to recover desks

OSH: The State does not guarantee free or compulsory education

The lack of desks for children and adolescents brought together school directors, teachers, parents and representatives of Maturín who put “hands to work” to repair desks and provide students with better conditions for educational practice. The board of directors of the school pointed out that they continue in their desire to improve and called on parents to continue adding so that their children have the best possible education and the best spaces

Three weeks before the start of the 2022-2023 school year, with a call to classes in full attendance, the schools are filling up with students, while the deterioration and lack of tools necessary for academic activity are evident. In Maturín, the highest demand in schools is desks. The lack of this fundamental resource for children and adolescents, brought together school directors, teachers, parents and representatives to put “hands to work” to repair the desks and provide students with better conditions for educational practice.

Lisbeth Vásquez, a third-grade teacher at the José Damián Ramírez Labrador school, pointed out that in her classroom alone, 12 tables, chairs or desks are missing, so that her students do not sit on the floor. “Some representatives, faced with the shortage of tables, chairs and desks, have taken the initiative to take those that are deteriorated to repair them; also those that they can acquire to donate them”, he commented.

Although in his 16 years as a teacher he considers that this has been the worst school scenario given the deterioration of the classroom and the school in general, he assured that parents and representatives have taken initiatives that are making a difference.

“Of course I regret that classes were called without covering the needs of each classroom and the school. But in the face of adversity, I congratulate the parents and representatives who came, listened and saw the state of their children’s classroom, to organize themselves and put a grain of sand”, he added.

With pride, teacher Libeth recounts: “The first week of school the children sat on the floor and this third week the gap of 12 desks is covered in the third grade class and other teachers are following suit. An action that can only be achieved with responsible parents and teachers.”

The joy of work that bears fruit

The Fe y Alegría Ángel de la Guarda Technical School, located in the Sabana Grande community, in one of the largest popular sectors of Maturín, closed last school year with a demand for 450 desks.

The directors, teachers, professors and students got down to work to rescue, assemble and give a new face to their desks and guarantee that this new year their more than one thousand two hundred students have the long-awaited desk.

The campus director, Lilian Pereira, stressed that although last year was positive, students had to be divided into shifts to alleviate the lack of desks, even an increase in enrollment forced them to activate the rescue of their deteriorating desks. and those that were inoperative.

“We bought wood, screws, sandpaper, paint and together with the students of the last year we rescued the first 100 desks. We continued a campaign to rescue and manufacture desks throughout the vacation period and we managed to rescue and put more than 300 into use. A sacrificial teamwork that today makes us very proud”, he said.

The board pointed out that they continue in their desire to improve and also in the work of calling parents and students to continue adding so that their children have the best possible education and the best spaces.

Positive experiences like that of these two educational institutions are replicated and applied in other schools in Maturín. They are part of the good news that is worth telling.
