MADRID, Spain.- Working conditions and social security are among the major problems faced by Cubans, confirmed data revealed by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH).
According to report “The State of Social Rights in Cuba”, presented this Thursday by the OCDH, 64% of 1,227 Cubans interviewed consider that labor rights are not respected in Cuba. While 51% of those surveyed said they were unaware of any instance to turn to in case of violation of these.
For a person to access a job there is discrimination of some kind, said more than half of those interviewed (56%). Among the factors mentioned by those who believe that there is employment discrimination, political ideas (82%) and criminal records (63%) are in the first place. Membership in a civil society association (32%) and religious ideas (28%) are also among the most mentioned reasons. Just as they denounced that there is political and ideological control of the workers (60%).
Regarding labor contracting in the field of foreign investment, a large majority of the population agrees that contracting should be carried out directly between the company and the worker (75%), and that the State should not keep a percentage of the salary (66%).
Regarding the salary of workers in Cuba, the majority of the population (80%) considers that it is insufficient according to the workload. More than half of those interviewed (51%) have trouble buying even the most basic items.
For the preparation of its report, the OCDH conducted interviews in 59 municipalities of 14 of the 16 provinces of Cuba.
At the end of last August, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (REDESCA) called on the Cuban Government to guarantee the right to decent work and labor and union rights. , under conditions of equality.
In monitoring the critical economic situation on the Island for months, the IACHR obtained testimonies from Cubans who denounce the existence of long working hours without receiving the corresponding remuneration; the payment of low salaries that do not cover the basic necessities of life; and the existence of precarious working conditionssuch as the lack of means and work tools or the existence of unhealthy conditions in the workplace.
