Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised this Friday that his government will support Venezuelan migrants stranded in the country after a week of new US measures, which include their immediate deportation to Mexico.
“It is a procedure that takes time, we are going to support those who are in our territory; as we always do, with shelters, with food, with medical attention », he assured in his press conference
The Mexican president reiterated his support for the plan that Washington implemented last week to grant 24,000 humanitarian visas to Venezuelans arriving by air.
Given the measure, which surprised Venezuelans who were already in Mexico, López Obrador acknowledged that there are “quite a few” migrants from Venezuela in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, an area in southeastern Mexico, where municipal authorities ask for support because they are overwhelmed.
“In effect, there are shelters, there is communication with the municipal presidents of that region and they are being helped, and they will continue to be supported, this for what corresponds to the south of the country, and the same is being done in the north” , assured.
