Martín Lema, Minister of Social Developmentin a message in which he alluded to Fernando Pereira –president of the Broad Front–indicated that “in order not to engage in low-level politics” one must “be informed” and “not resort to demagoguery.”

Lema, on the social network Twitter, this Friday in a thread of considerations alluded to statements made by Pereira. Among other considerations, the former president of the PIT-CNT mentioned “the food deficit problems that Uruguayan society has”.

“Among so many false and inaccurate expressions, Pereira referred to the first official report on food insecurity that we presented yesterday. In the case of such an important and sensitive issue, we understand it pertinent correct certain misinformation that is intended to generate”, explained Lema, who made four comments:

  • According to FAO, in 2016 our country reached a peak of 27.83% of moderate or severe food insecurity in people and 9.14% of severe food insecurity.
  • Between 2016 and 2020, moderate or severe food insecurity did not fall below 22% and severe 5.53%.
  • For the first time, it was measured more rigorously in the official report that we presented yesterday using the INE methodology, giving 15% moderate or severe households and 2.6% severe.
  • This information will allow for more efficient actions and resource management. In previous reports, the FAO studied a sample of 1,000 cases, now the INE studies more than 7,600, which makes it possible to analyze by region and income and target policies.

Finally, Lema considered: “It is difficult to understand how a national policy that is beginning and marks a milestone in the measurement of such substantial indicators generates absurd and irresponsible reactions. In the meantime, we will continue along the path of reinforcing INDA to improve access to food.
