A crowd marched to the mayors' summit under the flag "The debt is with the South"

A crowd of young people and activists from different environmental organizations They gathered in the Plaza Miter of the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Recoleta to march towards the Buenos Aires Exhibition Center to demand that the mayors and mayors of the most important cities in the world gathered in Argentina take concrete measures to prevent and mitigate the consequences of Climate Change.

With flags and drums, numerous organizations such as “Youth for Climate”, “Now What”, “Eco House”, “Consciente Colectivo” and others began to gather around 5 pm chanting slogans about the need for government authorities to take action concrete measures to reduce polluting emissions and advance in mitigation policies that guarantee the quality of life for the most vulnerable sectors.

Numerous demonstrators from spaces such as the Observatory for the Right to the City were also concentrated in Plaza San Martín, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Retiro, from where they joined the call.

Through a statement, Youth for Climate indicated that the main slogan is “The debt is with the South” referring to the urgent need to transfer funds from the richest and most polluting cities to those that will suffer the impacts stronger from climate change.

In addition, local concerns such as the lack of green spaces, the inaccessibility of the La Plata River, the need for electric public transport and waste management policy, among other topics, will be discussed.

Nicolás Gallardo, a lawyer, a master’s student in Environmental Management and a member of Youth for Climate, maintained that “cities are the main responsible for climate change, and also the ones that will feel its consequences the most. We have the obligation to reduce our emissions; but it is also an opportunity to improve the quality of life of citizens”.

Within the framework of the world summit of mayors against global warming Youth for Climate Argentina, in addition to actively participating in the event, will carry out a series of actions with the aim of making visible the claims of the environmental youth of the city of Buenos Aires and of all the planet.

Internationally renowned activists such as Leonie Bremier (German activist), Marie Chureau (French activist) and Hilda Nakabuye (Ugandan activist) will participate in the proposals.

Within the Youth for Climate conference, Argentina will have spaces for environmental education and dissemination of climate change.
