The Iguazú Falls increased their water flow up to 10 times more than usual due to the intense rains of recent days, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported this Friday.
Meteorologist Matías Reinoso detailed, in statements to Télam, that “So far in October, several cities in Misiones have recorded more than 200 millimeters of accumulated precipitation”causing a rise in the flow of water from the falls.
One of the localities that registered the most rains was Bernardo de Irigoyen, with an accumulated value of 324.5 millimeters, so far this month, according to the SMN specialist.
Days ago, the intense rains and the flooding of the Iguazú River caused the closure of the pedestrian promenade to the viewpoint of the Salto Unión, of the Garganta del Diablo, for security reasons and to put the walkways in condition, as reported on the occasion by the Administration of National Parks.
“The dominance of low pressures in the far north of the country and the continuous entry of humid air into the coastal provinces have led to quite rainy weeks in the region, mainly in Misiones and Formosa,” Reinoso explained.
The meteorologist added that “in both provinces, the accumulated precipitation values measured during the first 10 days of October exceeded the normal values for the time” and pointed out that “the most intense rains occurred in the center and north of Misiones.”
Reinoso anticipated that the next period of heavy rains in the area could arrive in the middle of next week “with the passage of a cold front that, in addition, could generate phenomena of varying intensity throughout the central strip of the country.”
