This Thursday, October 20, Panama became the first country in Latin America to perform robotic surgery in a public health facility, after a procedure with the Hugo RAS system.
In this sense, Dr. Miguel Ángel Cáceres, deputy director of Technology and Security of the Social Security Fund, emphasized this morning on Radio Panama that yesterday was a great day after what happened.
“This is the first time that this equipment is purchased for the public sector in Latin America. Until yesterday, they only existed in the private sector, so we are pioneers in this technology », he explained.
He stressed that this not only improves the recovery of patients, but also reduces the use of beds, which today must be controlled.
“A surgery of these levels usually required recovery times of up to 30-40 days, in this case it is reduced between 5 to 10 days, which is a significant advance for individual patients,” he said.
He stressed that the fact that Panama has this and no other Latin American country has it in the public sector, should be a huge source of pride.
He noted that this system amplifies the capabilities of the surgeon, helping to see precisely where there are blood vessels to prevent bleeding, but also generates increases of up to three times in normal precision.
“They can enter places within the human body where it is usually very difficult to do so by other routes,” he concluded.
