The bombardment of “fake news” continues on networks

Continúa bombardeo de “fake news” en redes

SANTO DOMINGO.- While the Government announced a series of actions to strengthen national security, especially in the border area, the “fake news” continued to be the fuel to fuel criticism of Haitian migration and further strain relations between the two nations.

Last Sunday, a video circulated through social networks in which members of the Armed Forces detained 18 Haitians who were being transported illegally inside a vehicle with capacity for five passengers.

The image used for this statement corresponds to an arrest of illegal migrants recorded in 2018, where the driver of the vehicle was arrested and brought to justice.

During his visit to the province of Dajabón last weekend, President Luis Abinader warned that, given the explosion of false news, the only real and reliable information on the border situation is that issued by the Government.

“There is a lot of fake news on social networks and it is a discussion of how to intervene and what the population should know. We are respectful of the news and the free press, so the people must be attentive to false news, ”he said.

The president added that he received calls after false information about an alleged attack on the Dominican consulate in Haiti, which was actually an attack on a French consulate in Burkina Faso.

In recent weeks on social networks, the main reservoir of “fake news”, there has been an explosion of photos and videos of events that occurred in Haiti, released as events originating in the country.

The Ministry of Defense warned about the consequences that the use of “fakes news” could have to strain relations between the two countries, for which it called not to disclose alarmist information.

Abinader: “There is hypocrisy with the immigration issue”
Covenant. President Abinader stated that a migratory pact should be discussed in the Dominican Republic as soon as possible, after assuring that there is hypocrisy with the Haitian issue, which is why it is urgent to do so.

Given the economic, political, social and health crisis that Haiti is experiencing, Abinader revealed that he has not received official requests to help with a humanitarian corridor for Haiti promoted by the UN.

“We have not received an official request from any government, but from individuals, and we have rejected those requests. When we have it, we will analyze it, ”he warned.
