President Volodimir Zelensky called on Ukrainians to reduce energy consumption as the country grapples with electricity supply problems after Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Ukraine has accused Russia of targeting power plants and infrastructure in its recent waves of missile launches, leading to blackouts.
Authorities asked residents to reduce electricity consumption between 7 am and 11 pm on Thursday, including avoiding the use of unnecessary electrical equipment. “Of course, we will do everything possible to restore the normal energy capabilities of our country. But it takes time,” Zelensky said, adding that “our joint efforts” are “even more necessary than before.”
He warned that blackouts will continue in Ukraine and pointed to three power facilities destroyed by Russia. The president said earlier this week that 3 out of 10 of his country’s electrical installations had been destroyed.
The president urged Ukrainians to limit electricity consumption for energy-intensive household appliances. He called on them to be “as conscientious as possible” in order to limit blackouts.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the request to reduce consumption coincides with the start of the heating season. “Even a small saving and reduction of electricity consumption in each residence will help stabilize the operation of the national energy system,” he said. “I also ask entrepreneurs, owners of advertising spaces, shops, cafes and restaurants to save as much as possible on lighting for signs and displays.”
Anatoli Kurtev, the acting mayor of Zaporizhzhia, urged residents to put safety before comfort by reducing electricity use. “The enemy wants to intimidate us and leave us without light and without heating, therefore he attacks the objects of the energy infrastructure of our country,” he said. “But all together, having shown awareness, we can counter their intentions. Now each of us has the opportunity to help our country’s energy system.”
