The Federation of Press Workers of La Paz (Ftplp) calls to defend the historic media outlet, El Diario, founded in 1904, and denounces that not only the central government, but also the Mayor’s Office of La Paz and the Governor’s Office of La Paz, “They act in the scheme of economic suffocation that prevents access to state advertising”.

The trade union organization with 68 years of activity, with the slogans “Let’s defend labor stability” and “Without resources there are no salaries, without companies there are no jobs”, affirm that “Public and private entities bet on the exclusion of advertising, causing this company, like others, to run the risk of closing its doors not only to employment of its workers, but to the right to dissent and the possibility that other citizens have to exercise freedom of expression”.

FTPLP recalled that El Diario, known as the dean of the national press, is one of the oldest media in the country, and “faces one of its greatest crises, the same one that has deepened since 2013, the year in which (its building) was seized and subsequently disassociated from state advertising that other media manage to obtain”.

El Diario, founded on April 5, 1904 was the target of numerous attacks for its independent editorial line and as a result was intervened by the government on October 7, 1970the same day that Juan José Torres took office as president, and returned to his activities a year later, on September 1, 1971.

The union observes that the media should have the same right to reach state advertisingwithout this meaning not assuming their tax, labor obligations, among others”.

This happens two months after the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) denounced that the newspaper Los Tiempos, from the city of Cochabamba, faces tax persecution, in addition to the maneuver of a businessman linked to the state government partyto gain control of the printed media in Cochabamba that has been circulating for 79 years.
