The US denounces prison sentences against 11J protesters in Havana

MIAMI, United States. — The United States government denounced this Thursday the prison sentences issued by the Cuban regime against 10 protesters on July 11, 2021 (11J) in Havana.

A note from the US Embassy in Cuba indicates that the convicted had participated in the anti-government protests that took place in the Havana municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.

“15 months after 11J, the regime would have sentenced 14 protesters to up to 10 years in prison in San Miguel del Padrón for simply insulting politicians. We urge the regime to respect freedom of expression and release them immediately,” the diplomatic headquarters said in social networks.

The trials against those who participated in the 11J protests have continued in recent months, with sentences that have been classified as “exemplary” by activists and human rights organizations.

The 14 protesters sentenced to up to 10 years in prison were tried on September 30 by the People’s Municipal Court of Arroyo Naranjo. Among the charges they faced were public disorder, contempt, assault and instigation to commit a crime.

According to the media itself, the highest sentences were for protesters Cecilio Valdés Torres, Geovany García Soto and Harold Lázaro Guardiola Cartaya.
