The defender Martín “Pelado” Cáceres does not hide his desire for the summons to the Uruguayan squad that will travel to Qatar in November to play the World Cup 2022. The 35-year-old defender recognized the “illusion” that this possibility gives him, since he recognizes that it will be the last time he will be able to play in said tournament.
“Obviously I’m excited about the World Cup, because it will also surely be the last of my career,” said Cáceres.
In dialogue with Total Sports of Fox Sportsthe “Pelado” assured that he is not “counting the days until the start (the World Cup) because it is atypical to play in November.”
“Before it happened that you finished the season at your club and then the World Cup was prepared, generating that mystique of going to Uruguay and then traveling to the World Cup, now it will be different,” he added.
After finishing last season with Levante in Spain, the defender went to the United States to serve in the LA Galaxy. There he played seven games from September to date and accumulated more than 500 minutes.
Until now, Cáceres was part of the Uruguayan squad in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups. In the event that he is summoned to the fourth World Cup, he would break a record of participations that he could only share with Fernando Muslera, Diego Godín, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez.
