International Jazz Plaza Festival returns in the face-to-face mode

The International Jazz Plaza Festival, in its 37th edition, will take place between January 18 and 23, and to the liking of lovers of this musical genre, it will be held in person with activities in three venues, located in this capital, plus the projection on television and social networks.

They will receive the public of the Jazz Plaza, the National Theater of Cuba, in its two rooms, the Avellaneda and the Covarrubias; the Bertolt Brecht Theater, in the Tito Junco room; and the Teatro América.

Given the rise in the number of infections in the country, the doubt about the realization of the event in the face-to-face modality assailed, however, the organizing committee of the Festival confirmed it: there will be Jazz Plaza, and respecting all sanitary measures, the public will be able to listen live music.

In the most recent press conference offered to provide information about the meeting, the director of Jazz Plaza, Víctor Rodríguez, said that the epidemiological situation has been affecting the event, so they have had to make decisions to maintain the face-to-face modality.

Likewise, he commented that the link achieved with television will be maintained in order to achieve greater repercussion, and that social networks will be used, as in the previous edition, also giving participation to the public from the virtual environment.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to avoid contagion, this year Santiago de Cuba will not meet in person as was customary.

Indira Fajardo, president of the Cuban Institute of Music, stressed that she has opted to maintain the Festival, both because of the meaning of music in these difficult times, and because the public demanded such a space, after the cancellations due to COVID -19.

According to the program of this jazz festival, the Avellaneda room will host the opening and closing galas of the event.

On January 18, the Festival will start there with the presentation of Nachito Herrera and Habana Jazz, accompanied by a large number of Cuban musicians, and in a second moment, From blues to Timba-from Timba to Jazz, proposed by maestro Bobby. Carcasses.

From now on, musicians from the patio will perform, accompanied by international guests, including pianist Jacob Karl Anders (Sweden), guitarist Dominic Miller (United States), composer and pianist Ray Lema (Democratic Republic of the Congo) ; and Javier Malosetti and La Colonia Project (Argentina).

Academic space will not be lacking in this edition, and the International Colloquium will be held at the La Plaza Cultural Center, on 31 and 2, linking in its program, conferences, panels, screenings, master classes and jazz record presentations.
