The Ministry of Health of the Metropolitan Region, Gonzalo Soto, initiated a health summary against the Costanera Center shopping center. This, after a suicide that occurred yesterday inside the enclosure, when a man jumped from the fifth floor, ending up hitting a woman. The authority decreed “prohibition of access to the risk perimeter” and demanded “urgent measures” to avoid this type of situation.
“Among the urgent and necessary measures that were required were the installation of a temporary physical barrier that blocks free access to railings from the 2nd to 5th floors of the mall at a minimum distance of 60 centimeters from the railing, as well as fixing of tables and chairs to prevent escalation and prevent their use in suicidal behavior,” the RM Health Seremi said in a statement.
“Although the implementation of measures by the shopping center was verified, these are not enough to avoid situations such as the one that occurred yesterday. Along with this, the Seremi de Salud RM requested the administration of the shopping center that said provisional barriers be maintained until that the mall implement a definitive solution,” they added.
Soto highlighted that “we all contribute to the prevention of suicide, a task that must be seen as a responsibility, both for the authorities, the private sector, the media and the general public. It is important that we all get actively involved in suicide prevention.
Finally, from the Seremi they recalled that citizens can contact Salud Responde at 600 360 7777, where they can receive specialist care and carry out containment actions against a suicidal idea or attempt.
The population can also access the website of the Ministry of Health or Building Mental Health, where preventive information, guides and support tools can be found.
