Moquegua: wastewater treatment plant about to obtain international certification

The EPS Moquegua wastewater treatment plant (PTAR Omo) is in the process of obtaining the Technical Sustainable Management (TSM) certification by the prestigious German Association of Potable Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA).

As part of the procedure to obtain certification, the Omo WWTP was evaluated during an audit developed under DWA standards and with a TSM inspection model for Peru, based on similar systems in Germany.

The EPS Moquegua, the first provider to return to the municipal administration after being revived by the Technical Agency of the Sanitation Services Administration (Otass), under the Temporary Support Regime (RAT), is one of the five companies selected for certification at the national level.

Work at the Omo WWTP is carried out in compliance with established quality parameters, which are monitored and evaluated by the National Water Authority (ANA), the Ministry of Housing and the National Superintendence of Sanitation Services (SUNASS).

Among the aspects evaluated in the audit were the capacities of human resources, safety and health at work, operation and maintenance, quality of wastewater and environmental management. In this last aspect, the EPS Moquegua performs an efficient management of solid waste in order to promote the reuse of treated wastewater in favor of tall-stemmed agriculture.

The German delegation reported that the certification process for the wastewater treatment plant is 95% complete. “The progress in this certification process is one more example of the solidity that the company has achieved in the RAT. EPS Moquegua is a benchmark at the national level”, said the executive director of Otass, Héctor Barreda Domínguez.

Meanwhile, the general manager of the utility, Martín Soto Romero, thanked the technical help of the German Cooperation – GIZ and the Swiss Cooperation, as well as the technical and financial support of Otass, fundamental contributions to improve the processes of the Omo WWTP.
