The Nicaraguan political prisoner Suyen Barahona will now have a new voice that will demand her freedom in the highest European political spheres, it is the Spanish MEP Soraya Rodríguez, from the Ciudadanos political party.
“In Nicaragua there are more than 195 political prisoners, women at the forefront of the fight for the defense of democracy, including Suyen Barahona, president of the Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos). With her I had the opportunity to discuss last April 2021 the situation in her country, two months later she was arrested », highlighted the MEP in a video released on her Twitter account.
«Since June (2021) he has not been able to see his son and all kinds of visits have been suspended for 50 days. The conditions of detention of female prisoners and political prisoners in Nicaragua are inhuman conditions, conditions of torture, isolation », he added.

Barahona recently completed 16 months of being imprisoned in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Chipote”. She has been imprisoned since June 13, 2021, she was accused of conspiracy to undermine national integrity and was sentenced to eight years in prison. In all this time she has been detained, she has not been able to see her five-year-old son.
On October 13, the political prisoner Suyen Barahona, was awarded the “Human Rights Award” granted by the Progressive Alliance. The award is a recognition of her merits as a human rights defender and political fighter for democracy, Unamos reported on her social accounts.
