The World Bank closes its office due to the serious situation in Haiti

Port-au-Prince,.- The world Bank (BM) announced this Wednesday that it is temporarily closing its office in Haiti, given the serious situation that is being experienced.

“Due to the acute humanitarian and security crisis caused by the blockade of the Varreux oil terminal that has brought the country to a standstill, the staff of the office in Haiti has been evacuated out of the country,” the World Bank said in a statement.

It details that the closure is temporary, for a period of 30 days, starting on October 14.

During this time, Laurent Msellati will continue to remotely assume his duties as Head of World Bank Operations in Haiti.

The World Bank team in this country, assures the institution, “has organized itself to continue with the execution of its program.”

Haiti is immersed in a serious sociopolitical and economic crisis, to which is added the violence of armed gangs and the fuel blockade, which keeps the country paralyzed.

To this is added the difficulties of the population to have drinking water, something especially worrying given the reappearance of cholera in Haiti.

The Security Council of the UN suspended at the last moment an extraordinary session that he was going to dedicate to the crisis in Haitiwith which he intended to somehow put a stop to the deteriorating security situation in the country, aggravated by an outbreak of cholera.

The meeting had been called at 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) unexpectedly this morning, despite the fact that at the same time there was another scheduled to discuss the war in Somalia, but minutes before it was held, it was suspended and postponed until a later date. not specified.

Already the French ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, said this morning when entering another session of the Council that he saw it unlikely that this Wednesday any of the two resolutions on Haiti, which are currently being negotiated behind the scenes between the members of the Council, could be discussed. .
