Southern Mining Corridor again blocked by community members in Cusco (PHOTOS)

Dozens of residents of the town of Colquemarca, located in the Cusco province of Chumbivilcas, have declared an indefinite strike, blocking the Southern Mining Corridor in the section that crosses this area, claiming the State and the Las Bambas and Hudbay mining companies, for a list of supposedly unfulfilled commitments.

The protest measure began last Tuesday in the Huincho sector, when the residents of the sector interrupted the passage of the vehicles that transport mineral to the port of Matarani, however it allows private vehicles and public transport to pass until now.

According to Cayo Huaytani, leader of Chumbivilcas, a dialogue table was planned between leaders, authorities and representatives of the mining companies and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) however, the officials or representatives of the private company would not have attended the meeting.

In the act that was signed at the beginning of the blockade, the presence of the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Housing, Construction and Sanitation, and Energy and Mines, representatives of the PCM and even the presence of President Pedro Castillo himself, in order to report on alleged breaches that had been agreed upon in previous meetings.

In this document it can be read that the main order they make deals with basic sanitation for the entire area, through 15 projects that they denounced are in ‘the air’, They also request the delivery of a budget for the districts of the sector as well as support for farmers and ranchers in the area.

A police contingent is guarding the area. So far there have been no clashes.
