Nicaraguan dictatorship denies 18 minors to see their imprisoned mothers and fathers in El Chipote

At least 18 daughters and sons of political prisoners, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, declared total incommunicado detention with their mothers and fathers imprisoned in the Evaristo Vásquez Police Complex, better known as “El Nuevo Chipote.”

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in its Quick Report Number 7denounces that since the arrest of opposition leaders “the authorities have prevented persons deprived of their liberty, in the 2021 electoral context, from having direct contact with their minor sons and daughters, including receiving letters and drawings, or having telephone contact or by any other means.

The organization highlighted the case of political prisoners Miguel Mora and Tamara Dávila, who had to undergo a hunger strike in order to pressure the regime. Ortega granted both prisoners of conscience a meeting with their little ones, but after more than a year without seeing each other.

“Just on August 20, 2022, the Government authorized two visits for a period of 30 minutes after a mother (Tamara Dávila) and a father (Miguel Mora) deprived of liberty began a hunger strike to be able to see their children. after 14 months of detention in El Chipote. None of these visits would have been repeated,” she noted.

In addition, he highlighted that two political prisoners are currently on a hunger strike with the aim of pressuring the Ortega Murillo dictatorship to allow them to see their children, and another 20 inmates in the “La Modelo” prison demanding better conditions of detention.

Miguel Mendoza and Róger Reyes are the hostages of the dictatorship who underwent a diet without including solid food until they are authorized to visit with their daughters.

The United Nations Human Rights Office maintained that “these restrictions constitute a violation of the rights of persons deprived of liberty according to international human rights standards, as well as according to Nicaraguan legislation.”

He added that “the situation must also be approached from the perspective of the rights of the children affected. Nicaragua is part of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and within this framework, girls and boys have the right to visit their mothers and fathers deprived of liberty. Nicaraguan legislation itself recognizes the principle of the best interests of the girl, the boy and the adolescent.

Previously, the relatives of the political prisoners denounced that a visit is not enough and demanded that the authorities draw up a schedule of visits so that the children and adolescents can maintain regular communication with their parents twice a month and that they comply with the laws that protect the rights of minors.
