UN will scrutinize Nicaragua for human rights violations

The Human Rights Committee of the United Nations Organization (UN) summoned the Nicaraguan regime to a review within the framework of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“Nicaragua must be held accountable for systematic violations of human rights,” said the international organization Race and Equality, through a Twitter account.

The 136th session of the Human Rights Committee is convened for this Wednesday, October 19, at seven in the morning and Thursday, October 20, at two in the morning, Nicaraguan time.

The Nicaraguan Never Again Human Rights Collective and the Legal Defense Unit will participate in the review of the Ortega regime, who this Tuesday participated in a preview where the numerous violations of the human rights of Nicaraguans were exposed. Lawyers Wendy Flores and Gonzalo Carrión will participate in the session.

Given this evaluation of Ortega, lawyer Yader Valdivia, a member of the Collective, indicated that Nicaragua has been a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, “which means that it must respect the covenant and submit to the reviews carried out by the Human Rights Committee.” Humans”.

“It is a fact that —Ortega— is going to be postponed because he has not complied with the latest recommendations made by the Committee in its last evaluation, just as he has not done so at the highest level of the United Nations,” said the human rights defender.

He pointed out that as a Human Rights Collective they have been documenting human rights violations. “This helps the other states to be able to have elements of a United Nations Committee and more effectively demand respect for human rights in Nicaragua.”

It is likely that Nicaragua will not attend the evaluation

For his part, human rights defender Juan Carlos Arce told Article 66 that in view of what happened recently with the Committee against Torture, «there is a possibility that the State will not attend, because at this moment they —Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo— are in a situation of total contempt for all the mechanisms of the Inter-American System and the Universal System”.

“As a Human Rights Collective, we have seen that the Nicaraguan regime is disobeying its international responsibilities. These are not invitations in good faith, but rather are international obligations that Nicaragua has, but we have seen a total disregard for the mechanisms of the Inter-American System,” said Arce.

He insisted that the “nefarious behavior” that the Ortega regime has shown towards the Inter-American System “is taking it to the Universal System and it was possible to see in July -of this year- that the Committee against Torture carried out the second examination of Nicaragua, and they did not attend, rather they sent a terrible and offensive letter against the Committee, that is why we could be in a similar situation tomorrow, “he concluded.
