The Mexican Guadalajara Club, known as the Chivas, today announced the hiring of Fernando Hierro as sports director. The former player for Real Madrid and the Spanish team assured that he is excited to start this new stage in the offices at the head of a project that he defined as “different”.

“I have had many possibilities during the last two, three years. What I wanted is to go to a place where the illusion really aroused me, of a challenge, a project, a vision and a way of understanding football and Chivas is it,” he explained. Five years without a league title
Guadalajara is experiencing a series of tournaments with poor results since it has not won a league title since Clausura 2017 and has already been surpassed by its main rival in the country, the Águilas del América, the club with the most titles in the local championship with 13.
The closest that Chivas have come to another title in recent years is a semifinal in the 2020 Apertura. After that they have not gone beyond the quarterfinals and the playoffs.

One of Hierro’s main tasks as the new leader of the Guadalajara sports project will be to choose the new coach.
“We need a coach who knows how to work with young people who come from the basic forces, who has worked and knows the Mexican league, who has a mentality, who has worked in the big leagues in Europe. These are the characteristics that the person we are looking for must have and we already have it in our heads”, sentenced Hierro.
In recent days it has been rumored that José Bordalás could be the substitute for Ricardo Catena, dismissed on Sunday after elimination in the Apertura playoff, but the coach from Alicante has not coached any Mexican team. During his long career there are stages on the bench, among others, in Elche, Alcorcón, Alavés, Getafe and Valencia.
