This Sunday (16), in Cagliari (Italy), the 2022 edition of the Formula Kite World Championship, a sailing class that will debut at the Paris Olympics (France), in 2024, ended. Gold at the Pan American Games in Lima (Peru) , in 2019, Bruno Lobo had the best performance among the four Brazilians, all from Maranhão, finishing the men’s dispute in 18th position, among 92 sailors.
Lobo also achieved the most positive result in the Americas among men, a position ahead of the American Kai Calder. Lucas Fonseca finished in 62nd place and Bruno Lima was 88th. Slovenian Toni Vodisek took the gold medal. Singapore’s Maximilian Maeder took silver, with Frenchman Axel Mazella completing the podium.
In the female category, Maria do Socorro Reis was placed 42nd, being the fourth best on the continent, behind the North Americans Daniela Moroz (champion) and Kirstyn Obrien and the Colombian Maria Lizeth Rojas. French Lauriane Nolot won silver among women. The bronze went to British Ellie Aldridge. The competition brought together 58 female sailors in Cagliari.
The Brazilian participation came to an end on Saturday (15). To reach the medal races, held this Sunday, they needed to be among the top ten in the general classification. The two best advanced straight to the final race, while the others were divided into two semifinals, with four boats in each, in which the winners guaranteed themselves in the dispute for the gold.
”We cannot forget that it is the beginning of an Olympic campaign and in a new class that still has a lot to evolve. Bruno [Lobo] confirms its position as the best in America, a good sign for the next competitions, including the Pan de Santiago [Chile]in 2023″, analyzed the coach of the Brazilian Sailing Confederation (CBVela), Eduardo Abad, in a press release.
In addition to Formula Kite, another new Olympic sailing category will be iQFoil. Events take the place of RS:X and Finn classes. The Laser (men’s), Laser Radial (women’s), 49er (men’s), 49erFX (women’s) and Nacra 17 (mixed) events are maintained at Paris 2024, as well as the 470, which is now being played in mixed doubles.
