World Food Day: Where is the food in Cuba?

Agromercado estatal

MIAMI, United States. — This Sunday is the World Food Daya date that commemorates the anniversary of the founding, in 1945, of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

In Cuba, World Food Day is often remembered by the Cuban regime to list the alleged progress made by the Island in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. However, year after year the reality of citizens is the same: they sleep without knowing what they will eat the next day.

The Castro dictatorship has declared on several occasions that Cuba is one of the countries in the region with the lowest rates of malnutrition and greater food security, a fact endorsed by the United Nations based on parameters that most are unaware of and that are not adjusted to reality. from the Caribbean country

Since the COVID-19 pandemic shook the Island between 2020 and 2021, access to food on the Island is the exclusive privilege of a few. The departure of most of the basic necessities from the markets in national currency —to be relocated in the so-called stores in freely convertible currency (MLC)— forced Cubans to stand in long queues to buy any type of product. True blind queues that reveal the harsh reality that exists on the Island.

The Cuban regime has assured on several occasions that the collection of hard currency through the stores in MLC would be based on the purchase of food in the international market to supply the establishments in Cuban pesos, a fact that never happened.

Worse still: many of the products that are marketed in MLC are not even imported, but domestically manufactured. Something similar happens with many of the products that are offered on sales platforms such as Katapulk, sold to Cubans abroad at prices much higher than those found in countries such as the United States and Spain.

Going back to World Food Day, in 1980, the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization underlined, in its Resolution 35/70the importance of the date for considering food “a requirement for the survival and well-being of humanity and a fundamental human need”.

It should be noted that, paradoxically, the FAO itself It has been recognized Cuba’s efforts to improve the production and quality of food products for the benefit of the population. That said, one question stands out: Where is the food in Cuba?
