The United States ambassador to Venezuela, James Story, traveled this Saturday to Necoclí, a Colombian town in the department of Antioquia, a point where Venezuelans congregate to access the Darién on their migratory routes to North America, to warn migrants Venezuelans who do not continue north.
In this location, the North American official spoke with the group of Venezuelans who were stranded in the place because they were preparing to travel to the United States when they received the news that Washington had launched an immigration control scheme that prevents Venezuelans from accessing illegally.
Story stated that there is a lot of misinformation, which is why he denied rumors about an alleged 90-day extension to arrive in the United States before the implementation of the new immigration control mechanism.
“There is a lot of misinformation right now. For example, someone says that he has 90 days to arrive, but I tell them that the border is closed. Please, do not try to cross the border, it is very dangerous and once you arrive in the United States, they will not let you enter with the benefits you are looking for, “he stressed in a video broadcast on social networks.
The diplomat recalled that there are legal mechanisms to travel to the United States and urged the Venezuelan population interested in migrating to opt for this alternative, which consists of requesting access to this new migration program for free and from their homes.
“They don’t have to seek TPS (Temporary Protected Status) in the country. There is a legal way to ask to enter the country from your home, “Story insisted.

This number of Venezuelans represents 40% of the 25,000 migrants that the United States intends to serve in a two-year period through its new immigration control program.
The migration crisis unleashed in Venezuela has caused real chaos for other countries in the region, which are beginning to be overwhelmed in their attempts to serve the migrant population.
According to the National Migration Service of Panama (SNM), of the 151,582 migrants who crossed the Darién between January and September, 107,692 are Venezuelans and all are seeking to make their way to the United States, causing a collapse in cities like New York, which remains without resources and spaces to serve so many people.
